Mitochondria are organelles which are responsible for a range of vital functions in the central nervous system. Therefore, mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in neurodegenerative disease and has been a focus point for research worldwide.

This project aims to advance this knowledge by analysing published research studying mitochondrial roles in neurodegeneration. Here we compare data obtained from cellular models of disease, analysing changes in parameters of mitochondrial function in disease versus healthy controls. Data from published studies was collected into two categories: quantitative data comprising numerical information and qualitative data where mitochondrial function was reported in disease relative to control. A scoring system was designed to account for such differences. The data was analysed in relation to multiple parameters through Univariate and Multivariate analysis using SPSS and Excel platforms.

The analysis provided here constitute a platform for further development of cellular models for studies of neurodegeneration and for integrated data analysis of mitochondrial function parameters relative to factors that may potentiate neurodegenerative disease progression.
