The number of overweight people accompanied with symptoms like high blood pressure and elevated blood glucose levels increases continuously. The simultaneous occurrence of indications like increased blood glucose levels, high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, high serum triglycerides and low levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) is defined as the metabolic syndrome, which is a cluster of medical conditions. It is associated with an increasing risk of developing heart diseases, stroke and diabetes, but the pathophysiology of the metabolic syndrome is very complex and only partially elucidated. It is well established that altered mitochondrial function contributes to the aging process [1]. Recent studies have shown a mitochondrial dysfunction in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with diabetes type II [2], and patients with metabolic syndrome presented also altered mitochondrial function [1].

In the present study of the enable cohort the mitochondrial function of subjects showing one or several symptoms of the metabolic syndrome are monitored. In an interventional study adult subjects in the age of 40 to 65 years (males and females are equally distributed) are supplied with additionally 10 g/d fibers over 12 weeks, whereas the control group is supplied with a placebo supplement for the same time period. Thereby the effect of additional fibers in the daily diet is analyzed regarding the different symptoms of the metabolic syndrome. Subjects are examined concerning their body composition, resting metabolic rate, blood pressure, arterial age and several blood parameters. During this intervention the mitochondrial function of PBMCs is measured by high-resolution respirometry (Oroboros Instruments, Innsbruck Austria) before, during and after the intervention. In this manner the effect of fibers on the mitochondrial function of PBMCs is investigated.

The study has started in August 2017 and is aiming a total of 60 subjects with metabolic syndrome. Thereby the mitochondrial function of PBMCs in subjects with metabolic syndrome is analyzed and the effect of additional fibers on the mitochondrial function and symptoms of the metabolic syndrome is studied. Preliminary data will be shown.
