Mitochondrial competence

Description

Mitochondrial metabolic competence is the organelle's capacity to provide adequate amounts of ATP in due time, to maintain a mt-membrane potential and adjust the ATP/ADP ratio and mt-redox states to the metabolic requirements of the cell.

The term mitochondrial competence is also known in a genetic context: Mammalian mitochondria possess a natural competence for DNA import.

Abbreviation: mt-competence
