Skulachev VP (1998) Biochim Biophys Acta

Abstract: The action of both artificial and natural uncouplers is mediated by some proteins. Uncoupling is of more general physiological importance than heat production in brown fat. In particular, it is involved in the cellular defence system preventing formation of superoxide.
